Meteorite dials are not new to Rolex, nor to the Daytona. Indeed, we remember the reference 116509 with a white gold case which was available on an alligator or white gold strap with a meteorite dial associated with Roman numeral indexes which unnecessarily weighed down the whole.
This year, the meteorite is therefore making its comeback on the Daytona by joining three new references. Coming from the far reaches of the solar system, the metallic meteorite, the material that adorns the dial of the new versions of the Cosmograph Daytona, comes from an asteroid that exploded millions of years ago.
During their interplanetary race, the fragments of this natural matter of extraterrestrial origin and composed mainly of iron and nickel cool to the level of a few degrees Celsius per million years, which generates a unique and so particular crystallization, impossible to reproduce. on earth.
Rare and difficult to work with (it is fragile and breaks easily when working on it), the metallic meteorite is cut into thin slices before revealing, thanks to a chemical treatment, all the beauty of its internal structure, evoking intertwined shards. For its meteorite dials, Rolex uses only meteorite lamellae, the surface of which is particularly rich in shapes and reflections. Note that the chronograph counters at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock are black and that the Roman numerals have disappeared to make way for the traditional Daytona indexes. It is clearly not the most readable Daytona dial on the market, but it is undoubtedly a beauty.
The ceramic Cerachrom bezel of the white gold model offers many advantages: its hardness makes it practically scratch-resistant (but not unbreakable in the event of a violent impact), it retains its color despite the effects of UV rays and remains insensitive to corrosion. In short, it is made to last.
A durability to which is added the exceptional readability of the tachymeter scale (base 400), whose graduation is obtained by hollow deposition of a thin layer of gold or platinum by a PVD process, physical vapor deposition ). Made up of a single piece, the bezel alone maintains and seals the crystal on the caseband.
This legendary chrono is equipped with caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its completely redesigned architecture has made it possible to considerably reduce the number of components of the chronograph function, further improving its reliability.
The chrono is started by a column wheel and a vertical clutch offering instant and extremely precise starting as well as great robustness. The oscillator includes a blue Parachrom hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. Perfectly insensitive to magnetic fields, it is highly stable in the face of temperature variations and remains up to ten times more precise than a traditional hairspring in the event of shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex curve ensuring its regularity in all positions.
The white gold version is marketed on an Oysterflex bracelet developed and patented by Rolex. This strap combines the strength and reliability of a metal strap with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap.
It consists of a super-elastic metal blade overmolded with black elastomer. This material is intended to be particularly resistant to environmental damage and to be very durable. This strap features the Easylink quick extension mesh, which easily adjusts the length of around 5mm.
Like all new Rolexes, these Daytonas benefit from the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This attests that the watch has successfully passed a series of tests carried out by Rolex in its own laboratories and according to its own criteria, which are more severe than the watch standards.
This certification covers the watch as a whole, once the movement is fitted, in order to guarantee superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, water resistance, automatic winding and autonomy.
The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is thus of the order of –2 / + 2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.
